Mood Board: Verdes child`s bedroom and bathroom
This child’s bedroom and shared bathroom, with everything specified VOC- and urea-formaldehyde-free, was created with my partner Souraya Tohme as an assignment for the U of A Green Design course in April 2008. Our imaginary clients, the Verdes, were building an environmentally-friendly infill project in a centrally-located neighborhood. Their four-year-old boy suffers from severe asthma, so non-offgassing, easy-to-clean finishes were chosen for both health and environmental reasons. For this project, I sourced the majority of the products, with my partner having the veto and leading the space planning and drafting aspects of the design.
The digital mood board shows all products, finishes, fixtures, and furnishings specified. The bathroom featured Terra Green recycled glass-and-ceramic floor and wall tile with Sandhill recycled glass tile band detail, a Plyboo tambour-panelled vanity with Paperstone countertop and Spectra Decor’s aluminum-and-ecoresin handles, steel wall rack for towels, water-saving fixtures from Price Pfister, porcelain sink and cast iron tub from American Standard, hemp shower curtain, organic cotton-bamboo blend towels, Energy Star rated vent fan, and SunScope solar light.
The “boreal forest” concept bedroom featured Eurocork cork flooring, a cork feature wall, AFM Safecoat paint, FLOR’s Fedora carpet tile area rug, bamboo blinds, MIO Culture’s Capsule lamp, Luau portable lamp, Argington’s Fuji Toybox and custom-made matching bed, vintage oak desk and task chair, Cub cast-cork accent chair, GreenSleep mattress with Obasan barrier-cloth cover, Dream Designs organic-cotton sheets, accent textiles from Amenity and In2Green, and Swedese’s Tree Wall Racks as functional art.
The Eurocork flooring would be continued through the hallway, master bedroom, and sister’s “alpine meadow” concept bedroom. Her room would share the palette and most finishes`chosen for her brother bedroom, with its unique personality being provided by pops of pale blue and violet, Tord Boontje-designed lighting and decorative wall panels, and Amenity`s large-scale floral comforter.
